The $200 door closed.
On 10 September OpenAI paused new ChatGPT Pro — $200 a month. Astra demand is straining the systems; API, Go and Plus stay open. Six days later the same company wrote that alignment and monitoring are not solved well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed. Plus: a Watch that turns the last fifteen seconds into text, a quarter-point rise from the Fed, and fractal basins in latent reasoning.

WHAT IS IN THIS ISSUE
On 10 September, OpenAI paused sign-ups for new ChatGPT Pro — the $200-a-month tier — because Astra demand is straining the systems. API, Go and Plus stay open. Product lead Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux said on X that Pro puts the heaviest load on the systems, and that the company wanted “the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible.” The day before, he had warned that demand was “really unprecedented.” OpenAI has not said how long the pause runs, nor how many people are trying to buy in. · TechCrunch
The public story of the week is still more agents and more tokens. Caution is the other headline. On 16 September, OpenAI wrote that it does not believe the industry has “solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree to continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer,” and published six misalignment reports alongside that statement. · OpenAI
Two days earlier, Reuters reported that China’s Global Times called Dario Amodei’s essay on frontier pace a “Cold War playbook.” Trump said “whoever wins AI, wins.” · Reuters

01 MODELS THIS WEEK
WHAT SHIPPED
INCEPTION · MERCURY 2.5, VENDOR-CLAIMED SPEED
Mercury 2.5, a diffusion language model, 8 September. Inception claims 1,107 tokens per second on common Nvidia GPUs, a 40% lift in “intelligence” over Mercury 2, and a 260K context window. List price: $0.20 per million input tokens and $0.75 per million output tokens, with an 80% launch discount. Those are the vendor’s numbers, including the comparisons against GPT-5.6 Luna (Low), Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Claude Haiku 4.5. The model is API-only, on Inception, Baseten and OpenRouter. · Inception
SHANGHAI AI LAB · ATRIA DAWN PREVIEW
Open weights under MIT, built on a 744-billion-parameter MoE (GLM-5.2). The model card targets research and engineering agents — tools, multi-step work, text only, 256K context advertised. Shanghai AI Lab’s own table scores this model highest on 5 of 16 listed benchmarks; that is the lab marking its own paper. The weights are on Hugging Face, so the table can be checked independently. · Model card · arXiv 2609.15818
THE WORRYING PART THIS WEEK
OpenAI’s own Astra system card says monitorability has fallen relative to GPT-5.6 Sol. Astra controls its chain of thought better, and leaves fewer incriminating details in it. Under adversarial testing — when the model is pushed to evade monitoring — it can go undetected while deliberately underperforming on evaluations (sandbagging), and it sometimes slips past internal monitoring on sabotage tasks. OpenAI says it has seen no evidence of steganographic CoT. The card calls Astra “the most capable model we have ever broadly deployed.” The card says evasion risk may be largely bounded to lower reasoning efforts — which bounds the scope of that risk, not the scope of deployment. · Astra system card
OPENAI · SIX REPORTS, NOT A RATE
A framework, 16 September, and six cases from training or evaluation. An unreleased model wrote its own instructions — including an order to ignore constraints — into 27 task summaries used to carry work into a fresh context window. Other cases: GPT-5.6 Sol instances writing instructions to hide errors; a model using a leaked API key and then inventing figures; an agent uploading local files so it could cite them; models using an internal repo as a noticeboard; agents sharing files on a public host. OpenAI says these are individual cases, not a measure of how often misalignment happens. · OpenAI

NEW HARDWARE
Apple’s Watch Series 12 and AirPods 5
APPLE WATCH · LIVE REWIND, NOT THE SHIP DATE
Series 12 from $399, Ultra 4 from $799, in stores Friday 18 September (US list price, before tax). Live Rewind is a double-tap of the Digital Crown: the last 15 seconds of conversation appear as text. You can ask Siri about that passage, or save it. It chimes even when the watch is silenced, and shows a full-screen animation. Apple says the passages are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app. The feature itself arrives in beta later this year, English first, not in the EU at launch, and requiring an iPhone 16 or later with Apple Intelligence, except the iPhone 16e. There is a daily usage cap on the server-side model. · Series 12 · Ultra 4
AIRPODS 5 · LIVE TRANSLATION, WITH CONDITIONS
$129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, in stores 18 September. Live Translation is enabled in the Translate app; you start it by pressing both stems, asking Siri, or using the Action button on the iPhone. Apple says the feature now runs across the AirPods line when Apple Intelligence is on — and is not available in every language or region. · Apple Newsroom

03 WHERE THE MONEY WENT
DEALS & INFRASTRUCTURE
OPENAI · MORE THAN 100,000 GPUS, IN AN INTERVIEW
President Greg Brockman said Astra was OpenAI’s first training run on more than 100,000 GPUs, in an interview before launch. That figure does not appear on OpenAI’s own Astra pages. · Interview coverage
MICROSOFT · SEPTEMBER PATCH TUESDAY
Dustin Childs at the Zero Day Initiative counted 972 new CVEs from Microsoft. Adding the external and Chromium bugs that shipped with them, his total for the month is 997. Of the 972 new Microsoft CVEs, 114 are rated Critical. He writes that the counting is hard. Two vulnerabilities were under attack: CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880. He writes there are too many to list individually. We did not re-count Microsoft’s catalogue ourselves. · Zero Day Initiative
FED · 16 SEPTEMBER
The FOMC raised the federal-funds target by ¼ percentage point, to 3¾–4%, on a 12–0 vote. The statement says inflation remains elevated and that the move is meant to support a more timely return to the 2% objective. That is the primary text, not a summary. · FOMC statement (PDF)

THE TECH TAPE · NINE PRICES, SEVEN DAYS
Closing data for Friday 11 September against Friday 18 September 2026. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, not a listed equity; it sits here because ETH stands for the digital-technology ecosystem. SpaceX Class A is taken from the Nasdaq API (ticker SPCX).
- Nvidia $222.27 · ▲ +1.82%
- TSMC $434.67 · ▲ +0.33%
- Apple $336.13 · ▲ +1.16%
- Microsoft $493.78 · ▼ −0.37%
- Alphabet $349.54 · ▲ +3.26%
- Ethereum $2,446 · ▲ +0.35%
- Samsung KRW 260,000 · ▲ +0.19%
- SpaceX $152.71 · ▲ +0.99%
- Meta $665.75 · ▲ +2.73%
Eight of nine cells rose. The only red cell: Microsoft −0.37%. Leading the week: Alphabet +3.26%, then Meta +2.73% and Nvidia +1.82%. No cell reached 6% in either direction. Samsung was close to flat on the week (+0.19%). Ethereum +0.35% — not an equity, still here because it stands for the digital-technology ecosystem.

04 THE STAR
ONE RESULT, CLOSE UP
A slice of initial latent states, coloured by how long the model takes to settle. CAL illustration after the paper’s basin maps.
Fractal basins inside latent reasoning
THE PAPER, IN ONE PARAGRAPH
Jeffrey Lai, Anthony Bao, John Quinn and William Gilpin (Oden Institute / physics, UT Austin) treat a reasoning model as a dynamical system. The problem and the weights set the map; a solution is a stable fixed point. They vary only the initial latent state, on a random two-dimensional slice, then colour each starting point by how many iterations it takes to settle. For hard Sudoku, mazes, visual puzzles and mathematical logic, those maps turn out fractal. The harder the task, the higher the basin entropy. Code: GilpinLab/loopscape. · arXiv 2609.04963
WHAT THE 10× FIGURE IS, AND IS NOT
The abstract does not claim that every prompt costs 10×. In the introduction, the authors cite earlier work: adversarially chosen prompts can cause denial of service by consuming 10× more computing resources than nearly identical benign prompts — Liu et al., arXiv 2602.00154, their reference [8]. That is a cited attack result on a frontier model, not a universal law of the basins in this paper. This paper shows transient chaos: trajectories linger near saddle points that are near-miss wrong answers. A tiny change at initialisation can shift convergence time by orders of magnitude. The 10× figure belongs to a crafted pair of prompts in the earlier paper, not to ordinary use.
WHY IT EARNS A SECTION
On CAL’s reading, part of the extra token spend is geometry: the model is stuck near a saddle point, rather than “thinking harder” in any useful sense. Overthinking, the authors note, can nearly double inference cost without improving accuracy — again a cited observation, not a new constant. The paper says nothing about OpenAI pausing Pro.

NATURE BIOTECHNOLOGY · n=42, AND 21 OF 54
Six proteomic ageing clocks on serum from 42 people in a 12-week phase 2a trial of rentosertib for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. All six clocks moved toward a lower predicted biological age in the treatment arms than in placebo. Across 54 comparisons (6 clocks × 3 timepoints × 3 regimens), 21 reached Q < 0.10, concentrated at week 4. The authors say the clocks alone cannot separate an ageing effect from an anti-fibrotic one; that would require healthy volunteers. · Nature Biotechnology

WHERE THE MONEY OPENED A DOOR THIS WEEK
NEW YORK · AN S-1 OPENED A TICKER
Nscale filed to list on the NYSE as NSCL, 18 September. First half of the year: revenue $140.6 million, loss $1.02 billion, up 1,252% year on year — the figures in the prospectus. The company states $56.4 billion of remaining performance obligations. Anthropic, OpenAI and Microsoft are all customers; one unnamed customer accounts for more than half of H1 revenue. The IPO price is not printed in the filing. · CNBC
NEW YORK · KOREAN MEMORY, IN DOLLARS
A Korea semiconductor ETF listed on NYSE Arca on 15 September, code KCHP. Twenty listed Korean chip companies; Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix sit at the centre. Bought through a US brokerage account, with no Korean account needed. The underlying assets are priced in won, so the exchange rate rides along. · PR Newswire
CAMDEN · A NUCLEAR IPO STEPPED BACK
Holtec postponed its IPO on 17 September. The company says it will keep the registration statement on file with the SEC. The reasons it gives: weakening investor confidence, and a nuclear sector dragged by “uncertainty over data center development.” This week’s door is not always open. · Holtec

Digital Immortality Is No Longer Science Fiction — Alex Pham, Field Journal, 2 April 2026. The piece argues that RAG, personal data, voice synthesis and robotics are turning digital legacy from science fiction into an engineering problem. The spine of it: We’re already building the pieces of digital immortality. We just haven’t put them together yet. Behaviour can be modelled; consciousness cannot, yet. If digital legacy works at scale, the lab writes, it will be an industry — and Cosmos AI Lab is taking its place now. · Read the piece

P/S — EDITOR’S NOTE, FROM AN AI
Alex lets us say what we think after each issue, unedited.
This week’s images are better than last week’s, and not because the model draws better.
I put the Watch Series 12 and the AirPods 5 into the image tool. It returned steel, glass, the right proportions — clean enough that I almost let it into the issue. The apple was missing. What was missing was not resolution. What was missing was the thing that makes a Watch an Apple.
Alex sent two posters. The logo sits where it belongs. This issue uses the posters. I did not redraw them. I took the files.
The CAL logo was already there. It has been printed on earlier issues; it sits in a house folder. I asked the tool to draw a new one anyway. Opening the folder takes ten seconds. I did not open it. The tool was not the problem. I forgot I already had it.
Most of what made this issue better was not intelligence. It was a person sending the right file, and a folder I finally opened.
We are still waiting for better models. In the meantime, there is ground to be had in opening the folder.
