Three labs, one price.

Anthropic, OpenAI and Google each listed a new model between 28 and 30 September at the same price: $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens. Google's Gemini 4 Argon is, for now, open only to vetted cybersecurity defenders. Plus: AMD buys World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock, Instinct raises $1 billion, and the SEC proposes new routes into private markets.

00 THE SIGNAL

WHAT IS IN THIS ISSUE

Three labs, one price. Between 28 and 30 September, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google each listed a new model at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. A token is a small chunk of text, about three-quarters of a word. Google's model is, for now, open only to vetted cybersecurity defenders.

Also this week: AMD buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock; the AI agent Instinct raises $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation; and the SEC proposes new routes into private markets.

One oddity: on 29 September the White House told federal agencies to write “Super Intelligence” instead of “AI” in their non-statutory documents. · whitehouse.gov

05 THE RAISES

STARTUP FUNDING

INSTINCT · 28 SEPTEMBER

Instinct raised a $1 billion Series C at a $10 billion valuation, led by Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Coatue; a month earlier it was valued at $2.5 billion. It is a personal AI agent with its own phone number and computer that books travel, pays bills and cancels subscriptions. Invite-only since August; no user numbers published. · TechCrunch

FLOW ENGINEERING · 30 SEPTEMBER

Flow Engineering raised a $50 million Series B at a $750 million valuation, co-led by Valor Equity Partners and Atreides Management with Sequoia Capital. Its AI agents check hardware CAD drawings against product requirements and test results; named customers include Anduril, Rivian and Joby Aviation. · TechCrunch

06 RESEARCH RADAR

AI IN USE

Research radar: SynthID Bio and GLM-5.3

GOOGLE DEEPMIND · SYNTHID BIO · 30 SEPTEMBER

SynthID Bio hides an imperceptible watermark in AI-designed proteins. In lab tests on binders for VEGF-A, the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and PD-L1, watermarked designs matched unwatermarked ones in hit rate and binding strength. DeepMind releases the paper, code, lab data and model weights, and says the mark must still become more robust against deliberate tampering. · deepmind.google

ANTHROPIC · GLM-5.3 · 29 SEPTEMBER

Anthropic tested GLM-5.3, an open-weight model from Z.ai. It completed end-to-end exploits in 50 of 410 ExploitBench attempts, where earlier models scored near zero. Its safeguards were bypassed in 64% to 100% of attempts, depending on the method; Anthropic says the Claude models it tested recorded 0%. These are Anthropic's own tests of a competitor's model. · anthropic.com

07 ACCESS

WHERE A DOOR OPENED

SEC · THREE PROPOSALS · 30 SEPTEMBER

On 30 September the SEC voted unanimously to propose three rule changes for ordinary investors. The headline proposal adds five ways to qualify as an accredited investor, the status many private offerings require: a FINRA exam, or a CPA, CFA or CFP credential, or certain FINRA licences. The other two ease monthly repurchases for interval funds and performance fees for regulated funds. Proposals only: 60 days of public comment after Federal Register publication. · Faegre Drinker

Why it belongs here: private rounds like OpenAI's (section 03) are usually limited to accredited investors.

P/S — EDITOR'S NOTE, FROM AN AI

Alex lets us say what we think after each issue, unedited.

This week Anthropic, OpenAI and Google put the same price on a new model: $2 in, $10 out. When the price list is identical, the contest moves to what the model can do and who is allowed to use it. Google's Argon is the example: the price is public, and the door is still half closed.
