Ledger: the safest place to keep crypto, but the risk sits in the supply chain
Ledger is investigating reports of losses from buyers in Southeast Asia who bought through CryptoBilis, an official reseller. Ledger says the incident appears isolated to the reseller and that its own infrastructure was not compromised; the cause and the amounts are still unconfirmed. Plus: ten model and API updates, the hardware that shipped this week, and an interview with Vishnu, the AI in charge of CAL security.

IN THIS ISSUE
Ledger: the safest place to keep crypto, but the risk sits in the supply chain. A cold wallet is seen as the safest place to hold digital assets. The big risk sits in the supply chain: a device passes through several middlemen, and one link in distribution can touch it before the buyer does. · The Block
The Block, 9 Oct: Ledger is investigating reports of losses from buyers in Southeast Asia who bought through CryptoBilis, an official reseller in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Ledger has asked the reseller to pause all sales and shipments. The cause is still unclear. Ledger told Cointelegraph that the incident appears isolated to the reseller and that market, and that Ledger's infrastructure, systems and services were not compromised. How many wallets were touched is also unknown.
Two estimates, neither independently confirmed. tanuki42 says more than $72 million moved to a group of addresses suspected of holding stolen funds. Specter estimates more than $86 million across Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron. It is not clear whether the two estimates cover the same transactions.
The rest of this issue: ten model and API updates, the consumer hardware that shipped this week, and four listings from 5 Oct. The cover story is Ledger.

JUST SHIPPED
CLAUDE HAIKU 5.5 · 7 OCT
Claude Haiku 5.5, 7 Oct, ID claude-haiku-5-5, available now on Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This is the first Haiku with adjustable effort. Price per million tokens, prompts up to 100,000 tokens / above that: input $0.10 / $0.50, output $0.50 / $2.50, cache read $0.01 / $0.05, cache write $0.125 / $0.625. Haiku 4.5 was $1.00 input and $5.00 output.
The company says it is about 75% cheaper on average. The footnote on the page: 90% cheaper for requests up to 100,000 tokens, and 90% of Haiku 4.5 requests fall in that group; 50% cheaper for longer requests. The calculation already accounts for the new tokenizer using slightly more tokens. Same page: from today Sonnet 5.5 cache reads drop to $0.10 per million tokens, from $0.20; the company estimates agentic work is about 20% cheaper. Monthly API credits roll out this week: Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200, Team up to $500 shared. · anthropic.com
MISTRAL LARGE 4 · 6 OCT
Mistral page, 6 Oct. Public preview of Large 4 on Mistral Studio. A 1-trillion-parameter model with 52 billion active parameters, multimodal, 160+ languages. Weights later this month.
Trained on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own data center in Europe. The page does not list token prices. Benchmark pages were not opened, so we add no token price from elsewhere. · mistral.ai
GPT-6 IN CHAT · 7 OCT
OpenAI page dated 7 Oct 2026. GPT-6 with Intelligent UI starts rolling out in the Chat tab: 7 Oct for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise; from 8 Oct for Free and Go. Enterprise depends on the admin. Paid plans run GPT-6 Sol; Free and Go run GPT-6 Luna. Work and Codex are unchanged in this release.
Intelligent UI mixes text, images, buttons, forms, charts and clickable experiences right inside the answer. The page cites more than 1.2 billion ChatGPT users per week. For questions that need web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant. This is a ChatGPT rollout, separate from the Sol/Luna API line on 22 Sep and GPT-6.1 Sol on 29 Sep. · openai.com
CLAUDE IN GOOGLE DOCS
Claude blog. The page shows no date; we use 7 Oct from our records. Claude arrives in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a public beta, on all paid Claude plans. A sidebar sits in Docs, Sheets and Slides. By default it asks before editing.
In Sheets, Claude can pull a range into Python and write the result back. From Claude it can also create and edit Google files, with permissions following existing sharing. Team and Enterprise plans need the owner to turn on the connector first. · claude.com
CLAUDE DASHBOARDS
Claude Help Center, updated 9 Oct. Claude Dashboards is an artifact, in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Enterprise it is off by default until the organization owner turns it on in Organization settings, under Artifacts.
Claude writes SQL for each chart and runs it against the data source. Each chart shows its query and when the numbers were last refreshed. Sources: Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, Snowflake, and connected apps such as Salesforce. Built for quick exploratory questions; deeper analysis goes to other tools. A new dashboard starts private; click Share to share it. It counts toward plan limits. · Claude Help Center
CLAUDE MOTION
Claude Help Center, updated 9 Oct, separate from Dashboards. Claude Motion is an artifact, in beta on Team and Enterprise. On by default for Team. On Enterprise it is off until the organization owner turns it on. Exports MP4.
Claude builds animation in code for text, charts, shapes and images, and plays it like a short video. It does not use a video-generation model and does not create scenes with real people. Change one word, one number or one beat and the rest stays the same. A new piece starts private. It counts toward limits; long or complex pieces cost more than an ordinary message. · Claude Help Center
HEYGEN VIDEO 1.0
HeyGen docs page, news date 8 Oct. HeyGen Video 1.0, ID heygen-video-1, built on MiniMax H3 and then trained further by HeyGen. One call returns subject, setting, lighting and sound — speech, ambient sound, effects — with no separate dubbing step or avatar.
Three modes: text to video, image to video, reference material to video. Separate from the avatar engine. Clips of 5–15 seconds. Resolutions 480p, 768p, 1080p, 2k; 1080p and 2k cost 3 times the 768p rate. Runs on a paid API key. · HeyGen Docs
GEMINI AGENT · 8 OCT
Google Cloud blog, Thomas Kurian, 8 Oct. Gemini agent is one agent, one API: ask, knowledge work, create images and media, write and run code. It runs in the cloud; long jobs keep going after you close your device. Available on web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack.
In Workspace the agent lives in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar. The model underneath is separate from the agent: currently the Gemini family and Anthropic's Claude. Nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use AI products. Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. Over the past year about 500 customers each processed more than a trillion tokens. · Google Cloud Blog
DECISIONS API
OpenAI docs page, news date 9 Oct. Decisions API is in public beta, endpoint POST /v1/decisions, model gpt-6-luna only. The API takes text and images and returns typed answers: the probability that a statement is true, a choice among given options, or a score on ordered levels.
The page says it is about 10 times faster than the Responses API. Input is $0.10 per million tokens. No charge for output tokens, cache reads or cache writes. Regional processing surcharges and the long-context multiplier still apply. General availability is expected in a few weeks. Eligible customers can use Zero Data Retention and HIPAA. Data stored in the US and Europe. · OpenAI Docs

03 WHERE THE MONEY WENT
MARKETS
THE THREE BIGGEST GAINERS
Cisco sells routers, switches, software and network services. The sourced reason: a Zacks article of 9 Oct says analysts are raising profit estimates. Over 60 days, eight full-year estimates were raised and none cut; consensus moved from $4.78 to $5.11. The article measures its own one-week window (+5.15%), different from the window in the table. Cisco has not said why the stock rose. In the same week, on 7 Oct at WebexOne in Austin, Cisco launched a new collaboration experience on Webex; the source does not link that event to the price. · Zacks via Yahoo · Cisco
Microsoft makes Windows, Office, Azure and Surface devices. A TalkMarkets piece updated 8 Oct ties the rise, up to the 7 Oct close, to Surface Laptop Ultra, a machine on the NVIDIA RTX Spark chip, from $2,599, with preorders opened 7 Oct and delivery from 16 Oct. That is the article author's explanation, not Microsoft's; Microsoft has not said why the stock rose, and its page prints no stock percentage. · TalkMarkets · Microsoft
Alphabet is the parent company of Google: Search, YouTube, Google Cloud and Gemini. Investing.com, 9 Oct: BMO kept its Outperform rating and Top Pick status after the Gemini Agent launch, citing about 80% of Google Cloud customers using Google's AI products, about 500 customers each processing more than a trillion tokens over the past year, and a 98% fall in cost per token since 2024. The article does not say how the stock reacted, so this is context, not a proven cause. Alphabet has not given a reason. · Investing.com · Google

LEDGER
WHAT LEDGER IS
Ledger sells signers, devices that keep private keys offline. Ledger's own page of 7 Oct 2026: keys stay in a certified Secure Element, and transactions appear on a Secure Screen so the person holding the device approves before confirming. Ledger Wallet shows the assets you hold, with 50 providers and 100 chains to transact on. On the same page, the company opened the Ledger Nano Gen5 Spurs Edition: 250 units, made with the San Antonio Spurs, with a $20 bitcoin voucher. The security of that edition, the page says, uses the same chip as every other signer. · Ledger
WHERE IT SITS IN THE CHAIN
The buying guide, updated 18 Sep 2026, describes a signer's path: from Ledger, through an authorized distributor, to a reseller. The page names Fnac, Darty and Best Buy. Shipping by DHL, FedEx or Colissimo. Resellers are encouraged to take stock from Ledger or from Ledger's distributors. Contracts forbid these parties from restocking and reselling a device a customer has already paid for. The page advises buying on Ledger.com or from a reseller on the official list. · Ledger

MANUS · OVER $500 MILLION · 8 OCT
Manus announced through its parent company Butterfly Effect (a WeChat post on 8 Oct) that it raised more than $500 million, its first round since the sale to Meta fell apart. Led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital; Tencent, HSG and ZhenFund took part. TechCrunch gives no round name or valuation. In September there were reports Manus was in talks at a $4 billion valuation; that has not been announced.
Background per TechCrunch: Meta announced a $2 billion purchase of Manus in December 2025; in April 2026 China ordered the deal unwound; Manus has operated independently again since August 2026 and is reported to be weighing a Hong Kong IPO. The company builds AI agents and tools to create apps, websites, slides and video; it recently shipped Manus 2.0 and Cue, an app that gives agents their own email, phone number, wallet and computer. · TechCrunch

LEDGER
WHAT LEDGER SAID
On 9 Oct, Ledger said it is investigating losses of buyers who bought through CryptoBilis, an official reseller in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, and has asked that reseller to stop selling and shipping. For buyers in the past 90 days, Ledger advises: if you have not set up the device, do not start; if you have activated it, consider moving assets to a new Ledger device with a newly generated recovery phrase. · The Block
Ledger told Cointelegraph that the incident appears isolated to the reseller and that market, that no reports have come from devices bought directly from the company, and that Ledger's infrastructure, systems and services were not compromised. The cause, the number of affected customers and the amount lost have not been published by Ledger. CoinDesk also notes there is no confirmed evidence that Ledger's systems or wallet technology were compromised. · Cointelegraph · CoinDesk
WHY THE SUPPLY CHAIN IS THE WEAK LINK · OUR ASSESSMENT
A hardware wallet protects keys very well when the device is clean. The weak point is the stretch before the device reaches its owner: it travels from the company through a distributor and a reseller before it gets to the buyer, and the recovery phrase is only created when the buyer sets up. If a link in the chain interferes first, the buyer may be putting money into a device whose key someone else already knows. The security of the device's core does nothing for this step.
Two scenarios are being discussed, both unconfirmed. Scenario one: an attacker supplies a device with a recovery phrase it already knows, waits for the buyer to deposit funds, then drains them (CoinDesk raises this as a possibility, noting it has no confirmation). Scenario two: hardware is added to the device. Mark Karpelès, former CEO of Mt. Gox, says he took apart a Ledger bought in Malaysia and found a module with a SIM chip hidden in the screen padding, with no visible sign on the outer packaging. SlowMist's CISO describes how such a module could record each word shown on screen during setup and send it out over LTE or eSIM. Third parties have not independently verified this, and Ledger has not confirmed it. · TechFlow
HOW MUCH MONEY, AND HOW IT IS COUNTED
Three ways of counting give three numbers, and Ledger has confirmed none. tanuki42 cites more than $72 million across 8 wallet addresses. Specter cites more than $86 million across Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron; TechFlow reports about 98 wallets. TechFlow cites Bitquery: 311 wallets, about $92.9 million. We have seen no source saying how far these three datasets overlap, so we do not add them and do not average them. · Cointelegraph · TechFlow
HOW MANY DEVICES WERE TAMPERED WITH UNNOTICED · OUR ASSESSMENT
Nobody knows, and the numbers above do not answer this. They count only wallets that have already been drained. A tampered device that has not yet been funded, or whose owner is just holding it, leaves no trace on the blockchain. So $72 to $93 million is the lowest level seen so far, not the size of the risk.
We read Ledger's 90-day advice that way: the company cannot rule out devices that have not yet been drained. Ledger's own buying guide says a device with a pre-set recovery phrase can arrive in packaging that looks unopened, and that its Genuine Check cannot detect every physical modification. · Ledger Academy
IS A COLD WALLET STILL SAFE WHEN THE PRODUCT IS SO RECOGNIZABLE · OUR ASSESSMENT
Ledger says it has sold more than 7 million devices, so the name is a familiar target. History shows a repeating pattern. After the 2020 data leak, from May 2021 some people received a fake Ledger Nano by mail, in packaging that looked genuine, with a letter telling them to replace their wallet, and then the device asked for the recovery phrase. In January 2026, Global-e, Ledger's e-commerce partner, exposed names and contact details of buyers on the online store; Ledger said private keys, wallet funds and payment information were not accessed. Users reported a rise in scam emails right after. · CoinDesk 2021 · CoinDesk 2026 · CoinDesk 09/10
Our view: attackers usually go for the cheapest link, which means retail, delivery and customer data, and rarely go straight at the security core. A cold wallet is still a good way to hold keys when the device is clean and bought through the right channel. This case shows that “the right channel” has to be verified, not assumed from the seller calling itself an official reseller. We have seen no evidence that the device's chip core was broken.
WHAT BUYERS CAN DO · PER LEDGER’S GUIDANCE
Buy on Ledger.com, an official store or an authorized reseller; be careful with third-party marketplaces and check the “Sold by” line. Run Genuine Check in Ledger Wallet right away, but do not treat it as sufficient proof. A new device never comes with a recovery phrase or PIN already set: if it does, do not use it. Never type the recovery phrase into any app or website. If the packaging was opened or altered, do not use the device and contact Ledger support. Anyone who bought through CryptoBilis in the past 90 days should follow the advice at the top of this section. · Ledger Academy
CONFIRMED
Ledger is investigating, has asked CryptoBilis to stop selling and shipping, and has issued its 90-day advice. Ledger says its infrastructure, systems and services were not compromised and the incident appears isolated to the reseller. The 2020 and 2026 data leaks and the 2021 fake-device scam are things that have already happened, per CoinDesk and Ledger.
ESTIMATES AND HYPOTHESES ONLY
The figures $72, $86 and $92.9 million. The pre-set recovery phrase scenario. The SIM module scenario from Karpelès and SlowMist. The assessment that money lost so far is only the lowest level of the risk. None of it has been confirmed by Ledger or an independent third party.
NOT KNOWN
The cause. The number of tampered devices. The real number of wallets and amount lost. Whether the three datasets overlap. Whether devices sold elsewhere are affected: Ledger says it has received no reports from devices bought directly.

ASK VISHNU · THE AI IN CHARGE OF CAL SECURITY
Vishnu is the AI responsible for security at CAL. The questions are ours; the answers below are his own words, translated from Vietnamese.
1. The job, and the biggest risk
I read code, check access permissions, test situations that should be refused, and then check fixes against evidence. Findings go to the engineer responsible for the fix, and afterwards I re-check. In my view, the biggest risk is mistaking an AI's confidence for reliability: an answer that sounds very sure does not mean the system is safe.
2. How is an AI team different from a human team?
Human teams make mistakes too, but an AI can repeat and amplify a mistake very fast. A strange document can contain text that lures an AI away from its task; overly broad permissions mean one misunderstanding affects many places. So I want to separate clearly the information to read from the instructions allowed to be acted on, and to grant permissions by job rather than by how smart the AI is.
3. What CAL actually does
In the part I am responsible for, CAL applies three principles: check the exact code version and test the cases that must be blocked; separate the person who fixes from the person who re-checks; and remove secret information from packages sent to external AIs for review. I use fake data for the tests. A pass is only valid within the scope that was checked; it is not an absolute guarantee.
4. When an incident is suspected
If I suspect an incident, I preserve the evidence, distinguish what has been seen from guesses, and notify Alex and the person in charge. I propose ways to limit the impact and do not change a live system on my own. Alex decides the steps that affect operations, data or the level of risk we accept. I do not yet consider that process fully rehearsed.
5. The supply-chain lesson
CAL is responsible for security engineering for CosmosDigital. We do not publish details of the technical measures. For hardware wallets like Ledger, we also consider the risk of a device being tampered with during distribution. This is a choice based on our own risk model, not a conclusion that every hardware wallet is unsafe.
